Maura Bendett’s resin and plastic sculptures exist as oddly alien transformations of space and form into a nearly heretical imaginative landscape, making these works appear almost as paintings that have somehow broken through the rigid confines of the picture plane. Bendett achieves a unique syncopation of shape, gesture and implied movement through a precise process of selection and assimilation of materials, constructing multi-layered armatures of resin and plastic onto which she builds each strange and compelling mini universe. These works appear less as decorative objects, and more as intensely imagined psychological reflections or schisms that maniacally seduce even as they remain calm and seemingly effortless.
